Bench 43

Bench 43 is a piece inspired by the Art Deco movement, consisting of a welded together mild steel frame with Cedar inserts. The piece is inspired by stain glass windows and shapes commonly found in and associated with the era.

The brief for this project was to create a piece of furniture which had a connection to its location. I achieved this by repurposing some of the left over Cedar cladding which was on the exterior of the building it was located near. This created a valuable connection with the piece and its location, giving it a unique history for the client.

There were many aspects that were challenging in the construction of this piece, such as the time of crafting each individual angled mild steel component as well as securing the inserts within the frame. This was a vital aspect of the piece as it would make it comfortable as well as create that valuable connection between client and location, which was at the centre of this project. The method I used for this was to create a small underframe which would allow the wooden pieces to slot into the frame and be secured from underneith. This allowed me to maintain the strength of the piece while not disrupting the aesthetics of core idea behind it.
